How to register for MTD Self Assessment

It is important that you register for MTD ITSA before to try to connect our app to your account.

1. Check if you are eligible?

You can sign up if you:

  • Are already registered for Self Assessment
  • Have submitted a tax return in the last 2 years
  • Are a sole trader or landlord with qualifying income

MTD becomes mandatory if your self-employment + property income exceeds:

  • £50,000 from April 2026
  • £30,000 from April 2027

You can also volunteer earlier to get used to the system, or if you want to take advantages provided by this service. One of the main advantages is that anyone using the service can trigger a Tax Calculation from HMRC at any time. The Calculation will use the information that you provided to HMRC to give you an approximate estimate of the tax that you may have to pay.

2. Information you will need to sign up.

When signing up, HMRC will ask for:

  • Your Government Gateway ID and password
  • Business Name
  • Business Address
  • Nature of your trade
  • Business Start Date (if within the last two years)
  • Details of any property income or other businesses.

3. Sign up online via the HMRC website.

Go to the HMRC “Sign up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax” page.

  • Sign in using your Government Gateway credentials.
  • Confirm your income sources (self-employment or property).
